Make Way for Multiples

(I really can't help myself when it comes to cheesy titles. This one is ripped from some terrible cable TV show that I haven't seen & hopefully you haven't either, but the words kinds work here ;-)

Sometimes, I buy the same exact clothing item in multiple colors. Usually, it's T-shirts, long-sleeve Ts, or camisoles from places such as Old Navy, the Gap, & Target. I'll get black, purple, red or burgundy, & whatever black/grey stripe is available. But this sweater may be the only non-T-type item I've bought in multiples. I have it in black & purple (seen here, here, here, here, & here). It wasn't very expensive, & I adored the Victorian-esque puffed sleeves, plus I figured I could wear it open like a cardigan or button closed as a top, so it was versatile.

There are probably more items I could have, should have bought in multiples. I always tend to buy one in black, but that's the goth trap. It's safe, easy, predictable, & a little boring. Having an alternate sweater, skirt, dress, or top in a non-black color gives more wardrobe options -- because, let's face it, you'll be wearing it with black since black + color is the most basic level of Gothic Color Theory. Adding a pattern or print to black + color makes the outfit even more exciting, & if you want to go totally crazy, you could add a second color. Options are fun!

Do you ever buy clothing in multiples? If so, what items?

What I'm wearing today:
Purple ruched-sleeve sweater, H&M
Black & white striped skirt, White House Black Market
Black & grey skull-print scarf, gift from my husband
Black tights, Calvin Klein
Purple velvet pumps, Rocket Dog
Black & white stripey bead earrings, Kohls
Black & gunmetal cocktail ring, Icing

  1. Definitely the obvious stuff: socks, t-shirts, underwear. I have a cardigan from Target that I liked enough to buy a few more.

I hear you on the buying everything in black -- so often, I think "I like this, so I'll get it in black because it coordinates with my closet." I'm trying to escape that rut because now I need other colors to wear with all my black. I have this thing about not wearing two different shades of black together -- it's a Goth sickness, I can't explain it. I'm sure you know what I mean!

  2. T-shirts, and skirts. If I managed to find trousers that actually fit well, I'd buy those in multiples as well!

  4. I love this outfit. I really, totally love it. So many favorite things! The purple, the stripey-stripes, the element of spookiness, and then the satin sheen on the shoes. I would raid your closet and borrow this whole outfit off of you. And then I MIGHT return parts of it. Haha!

  5. I bought a dress in the late 90s that I should have bought in every color. I bought red. It also came in black and grey. I'm still kicking myself. Looks like I was poured into it. POURED. >thrashing about in fits of despair<

  6. Maybe I've bought cheap tops " buy two for xx..." and underwear of course. Those shoes are so gorgeous, perfect height of the heel and the colour is wonderful. And I must mention your lovely skirt again, its awesome.

  7. I definitely multiple buy. I like to get things (just about all things) in black, red, grey, and black with white polka dots. Then, I mix and match to my heart's content. Which is not to say, I somehow have acquired a large collection of green tops, but they are not multiples of the black/grey/red ones.

  8. I tend not to buy multiples, simply because my grad school salary couldn't support it (there were numerous painful "but which one?!" moments). Oddly, yesterday I finally realized that having a real job means that I can get multiples. I found a couple of summer dresses on super-clearance, same pattern different color schemes. Whoopee!

dotted lines - Very true about trousers.

Hexotica - Best of all, those shoes are comfortable!

Traicetrak - Thanks! And I know to keep this one well guarded ;-)

Tante Fledermaus - Aw yeah, the ones that got away...

    linnea-maria - Thank you!

Velvet Cat - Yes, mixing & matching is great fun.

    LovleAnjel - Score!

Sal - This skirt was spendy, but I've worn it so much in the past couple months, that the cost per wear is already quite affordable ;-)

  15. Multiples are great if it's a nice piece! I have been tempted to order the sweater I posted yesterday in grey. And I have a Stop Staring dress in black that also comes in purple (and I think cap sleeves instead of 3/4 length). Oh, I do have a button-up sweater with "corsage detail" from NY&CO that I got in both purple and black.

I love the purple with the bold stripes.
