Status Report: Love What You Do

It's taken a long time, but I've pretty much managed to carve out a career that I like, if not sometimes really & truly love. I write for a living, which was always my dream. I don't necessarily write about my favorite topics, but I get to write & that's better than not.

In my 20s, I paid my dues by working tedious clerical jobs & testing out various different things. I even went to grad school to attempt to get into teaching. But finally, I got a job working at a newspaper's website, then a music website, then Yahoo!, & now a high-tech manufacturer. All of these have writing for the Web at the core, & that makes me happy.

But one thing I love most about my current position is that I work from home more days than not! Because writing is easier to do in my own element, not a noisy open cubicle arrangement. The collaborative parts of my job are easy enough to do by IM or on the phone or in a few meetings once or twice a week. The majority of my job is better done solo where I can concentrate. While I kind of miss dressing up each day to go into the office, I don't miss commuting or sticking to a strict schedule.

Best of all, I get to see my husband all day, since he runs his business out of our home office studio, & I get to work with our tabby cat.

Here are some of your status reports so far:

  1. Wow, you sound like you lead a wonderful life now. How awesome for you, and your family; I wish my husband and I worked together lol

  2. Not having to commute and setting your own schedule does sound like heaven, and how wonderful that your husband can work from home, too! You're right though - sometimes the dressing up for work was the best part! :o)

  3. I did have a few at-home contracts in the past, and the best part was being able to work with a pet on my lap. I don't think my yorkie would be welcome in a government office tower ;) Here is my contribution: http://gothicbureaucrat.blogspot.ca/2013/02/doing-my-homework.html

  4. Thank you so much for this theme, darling! It was actually very timely because I was really questioning this whole dissertation process. I've had a few academic breakdowns these past few months and I had wondered if academia was "right" for me. You made me think about why I love what I do, and for that I am forever grateful!

  5. This is fun, getting to know what gothy-people of blogger do for a living in reality. :) Your situation sounds nice, I bet pets would not be allowed in an office! Here is my contribution: http://daughter-of-jaded-era.blogspot.fi/2013/02/corpgoths-mid-month-status-report-love.html

Well, I have to admit, I'm kinda envious right now...I wish I could do the same thing, write for a living and still work from home. ^^
But my cat does the same thing...sometimes I let him type too...:P

  8. Though I love the sound of working from home, and spending all day with my man and the kitties, I don't think I have the self discipline it requires. Most likely I would end up baking cookies and watching Buffy all day :)
Thanks for hosting, it was a great reminder of why I do what I do!

  9. I thinkt that's sounds wonderful. Even if I don't have a cubicle but my own office, my door is always open to the corridor and it can get a bit noisy. I write in my work, mails, reports, status reports etc and sometimes it can be hard to express when people chatting loudly. I would love to work from home and have my own buisness.

  10. I'm glad you enjoy your work arrangements. I hope your cat doesn't try too hard to 'help' :P My cat is generally erm... a bit of a distraction to anything productive! I don't think I have the self discipline to be productive when it's so easy just to grab the laser-pointer and play with the cat...

I don't think I'd like my commute half as much as I do now if I had to drive to work.

  11. I think if I worked from home, my cats would think it was playtime for them all the time. They have a tendency to get angry with me if the laptop is occupying my lap instead of one of them. Glad it seems to be working out for you though!

  12. I work from home a lot of the time and I agree that it's nice to not have distractions from others. I'm very organized, but sometimes I need to close the laptop and stop writing and just decompress or I am dreaming about writing and sewing--often doing both at the same time! LOL!

  13. I hear you on writing better at home! I write at work and I'm constantly being interupted by students I supervise, my boss, my colleagues... It's just so hard to focus there! But I try to remeber that it also has it's perks to be a biologist.:

  14. I'm looking forward to my new work-from-home status. I didn't mind my Metro train commute in DC, but commuting 40 miles a day by car got really tedious really fast. Here's my post: http://gothityourself.blogspot.com/2013/02/mid-month-status-report-love-what-you-do.html

  16. I'd give anything to work from home. I'm in the exact opposite environment - we don't even have cubicle walls! :( But I still love what I do, regardless of where I am doing it. And here's my post to prove it! :)

  17. Aw, I like that your kitty works with you! My husband works from home a fair bit and the cats like to "help" him by sitting either on the keyboard or in front of the webcam when he's on a teleconference!
